3D printing technology changes medical

3D printing technology has been introduced at Peking University earlier in 2019. The university recently used metal 3D printing technology to successfully save patients with vertebral tumors.

3D printing technology is changing the medical industry. It is not only suitable for the development of new medical products, but also tailor-made prostheses for patients, and even applied to human transplant operations to save the lives of patients. 3D printing can also cooperate with 3D scanning technology to make models of the patient’s body organs, organs and bones, which is convenient for doctors to diagnose.


Stereo scanning is of great importance to the application of medical 3D printing technology, because it can create a round image of the patient’s body structure. With this data, organs or bones can be printed, for example, the damaged bones can be printed by light-transmitting 3D printing. With the model, the doctor can more effectively target the repair plan to ensure the success of the operation. High-end 3D printers can create complex and full-color medical models to help doctors better understand reconstruction.


At the University of Queensland, Australia, 3D printing technology was used to create ears for little girls who were born without a left ear. The graduate students of the university first took a stereoscopic photo of the girl’s sound ears, and then used the three-dimensional data to print out the ears made of silicon membrane, and then used biological glue to connect the ears to the inside of the girl’s ears.

Finally, the doctor in charge of the procedures, Liu Zhongjun, decided on 3D printing technology to tailor the metal stent for the patient to directly replace the damaged vertebrae and successfully save the patient’s life.
