Recently, the author learned that scientists from the central Queensland university are using 3D biological printing and crocodile cartilage as new methods to treat arthritis and joint injuries. Dr. Padraig Strappe , a lead researcher, said that growth factors from crocodile cartilage help promote adult stem cells in adipose tissue or bone marrow to become cartilage.

Dr. Padraig Strappe has been studying the extraction of growth factors from crocodile cartilage and the removal of proteins that trigger human immune responses. Promoting cartilage repair in the elderly population will also become more serious, which is a huge challenge. Unlike other types of tissues, cartilage has no blood supply. Therefore, traumatic injuries to joints, especially knee joints, may leave cracks or holes between the connecting bones, and the damaged cartilage will take longer to heal.

After adding crocodile cartilage' soup' to adult stem cells, use a 3D biological printer to print cartilage explants, which can eventually be injected into damaged human joints to fill holes. Through 3D printing, we can simulate that hole or that gap, so plastic surgeons can repair joints by filling this gap with a small cartilage explant.

The future research direction is the long-term repair of cartilage, so that people can resume their work and movement faster and they have no long-term influence of inflamed joints. This research is inspired by a CSIRO study on proteoglycan levels in cartilage of many different species for more than ten years. Crocodiles topped the list because their joints are very large, so it takes a lot of cartilage to maintain this movement. Cartilage around crocodile ribs is the most valuable part for researchers because it is especially rich in proteoglycan.
