According to foreign media New Atlas, nearly two-thirds of all denture wearers in the United States often have so-called denture stomatitis - oral fungal infections. To minimize this number, scientists have recently created 3D-printed dentures that can release drugs that kill fungi. This 3D printed denture was produced by a team led by Dr. Praveen Arany, Ph.D., of the State University of New York at Buffalo. They printed out using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is currently the standard denture making material.

For the outer layer of the denture, the scientists mixed PMMA with biodegradable microspheres filled with the antifungal agent Amphotericin B. These spheres both protect the drug from heat during printing and gradually release as it degrades.

In laboratory tests, scientists found that dentures were very effective in eradicating the Candida albicans fungus for a sustained period of time. When they were strength tested with traditionally manufactured dentures, their bending strength was 35% lower. Scientists increase their strength by adding glass fibers and carbon nanotubes to the material.

The scientists also tested the application of PMMA containing microspheres in one, five, and ten layers, although it turns out that more is not necessarily better. "We tried to test whether multiple layers could effectively increase the dose and prolong the delivery time of the drug, but it turned out to be incorrect," Arany said. "We observed that only a single-sided 3D printing layer can effectively degrade (5 layers and The tenth layer seems to be an irreversible fusion of heat."

In addition, the production process of 3D printed dentures only takes a few hours, while the traditional dentures take days or even weeks. The cost of 3D printing dentures is also lower. Arany now hopes that this technology can be applied not only to dentures, but also to splints, stents and prostheses that can kill fungi.

Scientists recently published a paper on this research in the magazine Materials Today Communications.
